Bernardo de Gálvez's Story

Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish military leader and colonial administrator, played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. Serving as the Governor of Louisiana, Gálvez secured vital support for the American colonies, contributing significantly to their fight for independence. Gálvez’s strategic brilliance and unwavering commitment earned him the "Hero of the American Revolution" title.

In 1777, Gálvez became the governor of the Louisiana Territory during the Spanish governance period. His career was propelled by his father, a general in Mexico/Central America, and his uncle, a royal minister under Carlos III. The young governor promptly endeared himself to the local colony by marrying a Creole beauty, Marie Felicité de Saint-Maxent d’Estrehan.

The Gálvez statue is of particular significance to members of the local Hispanic community and all lovers of New Orleans’ rich history.

Our Team

Echoing the efforts of the historic fundraising by THE LADIES OF HAVANA on behalf of George Washington Rebel Army in 1781, the Bring Bernardo Back Brigade was established under the Hispanic American Musicians Artists Cultural Association Inc. or HAMACA, a 501(c)3 organization to provide advice, direction, and seek funding sources that will ensure the Gálvez monument is re-erected at its prominent place on a proper pedestal.

The Bring Bernardo Back Brigade is a group of individuals who hope to be representatives of local communities that are deeply touched by Bernardo de Gálvez's legacy. Extending from the hispanic community to the greater New Orleans area, the Brigade's goal of reestablishing the monument is one that we feel will impact everyone positively. We are a crew that is growing every day and welcome new members and supporters at any time. Consider joining our cause to extend our voices across the state!
